Ottawa, August 28, 2024 — Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced the immediate termination of a temporary public policy that allowed visitors in Canada to apply for work permits without leaving the country.
This policy, introduced in August 2020, aimed to assist visitors who were stranded in Canada due to COVID-19-related travel restrictions. It enabled visitors to apply for a work permit directly from within Canada and allowed foreign nationals, who had held a work permit within the last 12 months but had switched to visitor status, to legally work while awaiting a decision on their new work permit application.
Originally set to expire on February 28, 2025, the policy is being discontinued earlier as part of IRCC’s efforts to better manage the number of temporary residents in Canada and maintain the integrity of the immigration system. Additionally, there have been concerns about misuse of the policy, with reports of individuals misleading foreign nationals into working without proper authorization.
Important Note: IRCC will continue to process all applications submitted under this policy before the cut-off date of August 28, 2024.
